That one night.

Anyone who knows me knows that I adore my parents.

I have tons of wonderful family memories, but a few nights ago I was reflecting on one of my favorite memories.

This one involves my dad and me.

This particular night, I was being a brat. In a horrible mood. I’d made a scene, grabbed the keys, yelled that I’m going for a drive (I’m sure every parent loves hearing those words yelled in anger by their child) stomped out the front door, and got in the van. Why I didn’t take the car, I don’t know…a van is pretty anti-climactic…

Anyway, I was angrily backing out of the driveway when I saw my dad walking towards the car and motioning me to stop.

I angrily slammed the brakes (on the van…again anti-climactic) and waited for my dad to inevitably order me back into the house and call me out for being irrational and bratty.

But I’ll never forget what my dad said:

“Can I come with you?”

Even typing that makes me a little teary eyed. Of course that night I had angry tears so I probably grunted and unlocked the van door in response.

And then braced myself for a lecture.

But I’ll never forget what my dad did:

He got in the passenger seat and just sat with me.

He was just there. Loving me silently.

No lecture. No disappointed looks. No annoyed sighs.

He just sat and let me drive.

His presence in the van accomplished something that night that no lecture could have done.

It vividly displayed to me what it means to be unconditionally loved.

And as I thought about that one night, I of course was reminded of the love my Heavenly Father has for me.

Extravagant, constant, unconditional love.

How many times I’ve walked out on my God.

How many times I’ve slammed the door on His goodness.

How many times I’ve been driven away from Him by my angry, doubting heart.

And yet how many more times He has shown me grace, lovingly saying:

“I’m going with you.” (Ex. 33:14)

“I’m here with you.” (Zeph. 3:17)

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deut. 31:6)

“I will fight for you.” (Ex. 14:14)

He loves me unconditionally.

I’ve said this many times before and I’ll say it many more times because it always blows my mind:

The One who knows me the best, loves me the most.

That’s absolutely incredible, earth-shattering news.

Unconditional love.

Friends, know that my Jesus loves you unconditionally too.

No matter what you’ve done, no matter what you will do…you are never too far for the grace of God to reach.

He loves you right where you are, but He won’t leave you that way.

He will create a new life in you.

He will stand by you, fight for you, and be with you.

Don’t miss out on this unconditional love.

Jesus radically changed my life and He can change yours too.

God’s grace in my life:

He loves me when I’m least deserving of love. He runs next to me when I run away from Him. He genuinely cares about every aspect of my life. The God of the universe is intimately involved in the details of my life. What marvelous, amazing, scandalous grace.
